You can naturally design your compost by gathering different elements that you throw away when you are cooking: vegetable peelings, egg shells, and possibly newspapers. Do not use animal waste, such as bones and fat. You can also use the waste from your garden: dead leaves, grass ... Be careful not to use sick plants. Tomatoes affected by powdery mildew or a vine with mildew are sources of disease that could contaminate your compost.
Maintaining the compost
The transformation of your waste into compost cannot be achieved without a constant supply of moisture. Regularly moisten the driest elements (wood, dead leaves, etc.) to speed up decomposition. It is not enough to stack your waste. It is necessary to brew them from time to time, in order to aerate all of your compost and provide it with the oxygen it needs. Remember that a good compost must be fed with various contributions and that it should not smell bad. Its smell must be that of humus, it must recall the forest.
Store the compost
Choose a shaded location sheltered from the wind to make your compost. Place it in contact with the ground, which will promote the development of microorganisms. You can buy a composter in a garden center, or build it yourself. If you notice the presence of earthworms, don't worry. They participate in the maturation of the compost. This one is alive; it is therefore normal to see it populated with various forms of life.
When to use your compost
Your organic waste becomes a well-broken down material after 9 to 18 months. You then have a compost that can be used in your vegetable patch, your orchard and your planter. Composing compost therefore has two advantages: it allows you to get rid of your organic waste, while providing your plants with a natural fertilizer. This avoids the use of chemical fertilizers, which contain pesticides.
